Below are some suggestions for home learning activities. Where possible the resources have been provided. We fully understand that you may not have all the resources at home to carry out every task.
Internet Safety
Please make sure your children are supervised when using the internet. The sources below have been checked internally at school. Please check them again before sharing with your children to ensure that your internet settings are blocking any undesirable content.

We are learning about food cooked during the war Food in the war was not freely available and was rationed. This made providing food for families difficult so housewives adapted recipes. Try making some of these war-time recipes from the Wartime recipe booklet. |
SPELLING |
We are learning about words with the sound ‘il’ and ‘al’ at the end of words. Practice segmenting (sounding out sounds in words) and blending the sounds back together. NB: Some words need to learned on sight and cannot be segmented and blended.
This week’s spellings are: Easy: back, into, but, his, him, had, got, the, off, and Medium/hard: Pencil, fossil, nostril, pupil, metal, pedal, capital, hospital, animal, oval. Activity Practice writing each word on the look, say, write, cover and check sheet. Then write a sentence for each of the spelling works making sure the spelling word is included. GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION |
We are learning about using adjectives in writing Share the Power Point resource with you child and discuss how the adjectives have been used in sentences. Ensure they can identify an adjective.

READING |
We are learning how to answer questions about a text Choose the appropriate level text for your child. Encourage them to read the text to you and then discuss the questions. Where the answer is written in the text (literal questions) encourage your child to find the answer. Where the answer is not in the text (inference) talk about the question and guide your child to think about a relevant answer.

We are learning about crossing the road safely This week is Road Safety Week so we are going to remind the children about being aware of the dangers when crossing the road and how to do it safely.
Work through the Power Point with your child discussing each point. You may want to link the ideas to your child’s experience of road safety. You could practise in your garden. Resources Road Safety Power Point |
MATHS |
Lesson 1 We are learning about counting money accurately Give your child some 1p coins. Ask them to count them. Encourage them to count in 1s then 2s to check they have counted accurately. Talk about the values of the 2p coin. Can they exchange 1 pence coins for the 2 pence coin? Work with your child exchanging 1 pence coins for other value coins such as 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and £1.
Once your child is confident in exchanging coins and understands that the number on the coin is equivalent to the same number of pennies give them a small pile of mixed coins and ask them to use a 10 square to add the value together. Repeat the activity with different coins. You may want to start with two coins and then build up the number.
Lesson 2 We are learning about counting money accurately Remind your child about the value of coins in pennies. Talk to them about the value of a pound coin being 100 pennies. Tell them that they are going to look at notes and will be counting notes. Provide your child with the photocopies of notes and discuss the value of each. Ensure that they can recognise them consistently and understand they are higher value than the coins. Encourage them to use a 100 square when counting their notes.
Lesson 3 We are learning about counting notes and coins Revisit counting coins and notes ensure they are confident with counting coins and notes. We are not using decimal notation yet so we are recording as pounds and pence. E.g. £5 and 65 pence.
Give your child some coins and a note. Ask them to add them up and record their value like the example below.
Repeat with different values of coins and notes.

ENGLISH/TOPIC |
Lesson 1 We are learning about the events leading up to Dunkirk and the feelings of some of the people involved in the evacuation.
Introduction Listen to the story of The Little Ships by Louise Borden https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyYMmVcxQS8
Ask your child to share their thoughts on the story. Encourage discussion by asking Do you think this story is true? Do you wish you could have been there? What if you were the little girl, or a boy who went on the boat trip? How would you have felt? Tell the them that the story is based on a real event that happened in WW2.
Share the Operation Dynamo resource, which explains the events leading up to Dunkirk. Emphasise that the British soldiers were trapped on the beaches with the Germans advancing and German planes flying overhead. Tell them that the British fishermen sailed their boats to Dunkirk to rescue the British soldiers.
Activity Look at the weblinks below and find out more about Dunkirk and how the British Soldiers were rescued. Write a newspaper report about the rescue.

Lesson 2 We are learning about the thoughts and feelings of soldiers making their way to Dunkirk to be rescued. Click on the following link and listen to soldier’s accounts of how they received their orders and travelled back to Dunkirk.

Activity Choose one of the soldier’s accounts. Write a diary account of you experience of being rescued from the Dunkirk beach. Remember to add your thoughts and feelings about the events. There is a diary check-list to help you remember all the features of a diary. You can use the diary template or you can use the lined paper in resources.

Lesson 3 We are learning about how the families rescuing the soldiers may have felt.

Talk about how it would have been for the sailors and their families travelling from Ramsgate to Dunkirk. How might they be feeling? What dangers did they face? What did they expect when they got there? Support your child in outlining some ideas about what they can write about including the thoughts and feelings of their character.
Activity Pretend you are a boy or girl on board one of the boats and are sailing with your father. Write a diary entry in character about what happened that day. You can use the diary template or the lined paper in resources.

We are learning about how to recognise bullying and what to do about it This week it is anti-bullying week. We are reminding children how to identifying bullying and what to do about it. Work through the power point with your child and discuss each point with them. Ensure that they understand the difference between a ‘falling out’ with their friends and bullying.
