Allotments – Week 1 learning activities.

Hedge End Town Council Community Website - Serving the Community ...

If you are able visit a local allotment site, or your own garden if you grow fruit and vegetables, see what is growing and how the land is used. Notice the structures created, such as greenhouses, storage sheds and cold frames. Take photographs, draw sketch maps and ask questions of those people you know who enjoy gardening. You could phone or FaceTime a family member or friend who likes to grow their own fruit and veg. Perhaps you can join in with some digging, weeding, planting, propagating and harvesting! Take samples of food grown in your garden or allotment to taste and enjoy.  NB - If are able to go out please do ensure that social distancing is observed at all times.

The learning intention for this term is to develop your use of questions to find out specific information. Can you ask a series of questions to speculate, imagine and explore ideas?  If those words are tricky look them up in the dictionary or an online dictionary to check the meanings.  Did you get them right? You will also solve problems and develop your critical thinking skills.

If you are not able to access a garden or allotment here are some useful video clips and links to explore and talk about with your family.

What do you notice about the allotments you have seen?  What is growing? How long do you think the gardeners spend looking after their allotments?  If you had your own garden or allotment what would you grow and why?

Links to research and explore (you can decide which links you want to watch and investigate and how much time you want to spend on this.  I expect you to spend at least 30 minutes of your time on researching these links. Then share your ideas with someone at home or call a member of your family or friend to talk about what you are learning):
