LO: To recall the celebrations of the Chinese New Year
Starter
- Introduce the topic of the Chinese New Year by watching CBeeBies video
- CBeebies: Celebrating Chinese New Year - Let's Celebrate - YouTube
- Discuss the celebrations taking place during the video. What did they see? what did they hear?
Activity
Create a paper cup lantern by decorating a paper cup (upside down) use brightly coloured paper as a base wrapped around the cup to get the size. Then pupils can decorate this flat before sticking it on. Use stencils, 2D shapes to draw pictures on the paper. OR create a large paper lantern. Please see paper lantern printout.

Starter
Share the Chinese New Year PowerPoint and recap learning from PSHE.
Activity
Use the Chinese Dragon printout to create a 3D decoration. Use pens or pencils to add colour to the dragon template. Once coloured, carefully cut out all the different parts of the dragon. Cut a piece of paper lengthways then fold into a Konstantina for the body. Stick down the different parts of the dragon, then add handles using lolly sticks or straws.

LO: To can investigate how the shadow of my puppet changes when I move the puppet closer and further away from the torch.
Starter
Watch and discuss MAIN light and shadow PowerPoint.
Activity
Use a torch and your hand to create a shadow in a dark room See Animal hand shadow display posters. Invite children to a discussion about light and shadow. Did they notice how you created a shadow of your hand? How is this possible?
Cut out animal shadow puppets and attach each puppet to lolly stick. Pupils to use torches to create a shadow of their puppet and to investigate how the size of their puppet changes when they move the puppet closer and further away from the source of light.
Medium - Complete the Light and dark Silhouette matching activity
Explore/Sense - Explore various torches, light toys, Christmas lights and objects that don’t create any light.

Activity
Hard – look at the animal pictures and cut them out. Write a sentence to describe each of the animals.
Medium – look at the animal pictures and copy-write the words to go with each animal.
Explore – Match the words to the animals and over-write the animal names.
Sense – Print 2 copies of the animals. Cut out one set and match the animals from a choice of 3. Make a dried rice or pasta sensory tray and hide the animals within. Let the pupils dig to find each animal.
